Hydration Habits: Staying on Top of Fluid Intake for Athletic Success

As an athlete, staying hydrated is vital for optimal performance and overall health. Fluids help regulate body temperature, maintain blood volume, and transport nutrients to cells. Additionally, dehydration can lead to fatigue, decreased endurance, and even heat stroke. Here are some hydration habits to incorporate into your athletic routine.

1. Drink Plenty of Water Throughout the Day

The National Athletic Trainers Association recommends drinking at least half your body weight in ounces of water a day. This means if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink 75 ounces of water. Start your day with a glass of water and carry a refillable bottle with you throughout the day.

2. Hydrate Before and During Exercise

Drink 17-20 ounces of water two to three hours before exercise and another 7-10 ounces ten to twenty minutes before. During exercise, drink 7-10 ounces of water every ten to twenty minutes.

If your workout is longer than an hour, consider consuming a sports drink that contains electrolytes to replenish sodium and potassium lost through sweat.

3. Pay Attention to Your Urine Color

Urine color is a simple indicator of hydration level. Clear or light yellow urine indicates adequate hydration, while dark yellow or amber-colored urine indicates dehydration. Make it a habit to check your urine color before and after exercise.

4. Consider Your Environment

Hot and humid conditions increase sweat rate, making it essential to increase fluid intake. Experts recommend drinking an additional 1.5-2.5 cups of water for every pound lost during exercise in hot and humid environments.

5. Recovery Hydration

We often focus on hydrating before and during exercise, but recovery hydration is just as important. Drink 20-24 ounces of water for every pound lost during exercise to replenish fluids and optimize recovery.

Additionally, remember to listen to your body and adjust fluid intake as necessary.
